Seaside Soul
Club Night Review
Saturday
16th April 2005
The
club is fast approaching two years and I have to say, its very satisfying
that each month we seem to bring in new attendees. On this particular
club night over 120 souls enjoyed a real mix of soul funk and disco
which would give any soul night in the North West a real run for
its money.
The
night itself went well again, and it was a pleasure to take some
time out from djing duties to take in all the music and the vibe
in the room itself. However I will be back with a vengeance in May.
We
will have a newsletter out real soon in time for the next gig on
May 21st and you can read more on that on the main events
page.
All the best gigs play music that people recognise and warm to alongside
the deep treasures that the boys want
to play and lets face it there are hundreds and thousands of quality
tracks that can be featured from the early 60ss RnB toones to the
brand new stuff and we like to think that we get the mix right.
The
highlights for me started with Larry and Tony's early start set
and is one reason you should make it here early not only to get
a good table but to hear the broad church of music. Rare Pleasure's
"Let me down easy" from 1976 is one of those
philly gems that modern producers keep sampling and namely David
Morales "Needing You" back in 1998, a class
tune which was subsequently improved on with vocals from Juliette
Roberts in 2001. They kept the Philly theme going with MFSB "K-Jee"
and club favourite Lou Rawls "See You When I Get There"
from 1977. But also keeping it fresh with Donell Jones "I'll
Go" and the superb vocals from Maxwell and "Don't
Ever Wonder".
The Dr chipped in with Jocelyn Brown "Somebody Else's Guy "
and plenty of fresh funky beats including Maysa Leak's take
on "The
Bottle"
to keep the groups of ladies congregating at the bar tapping
their feet.
As
for Tim well he played some real classics too and another great
set with these tunes; "Joy and Pain" from
Maze another version of "The Bottle"
from Brother to Brother
The glorious "Cashin In" by Voices of
East Harlem, motown magic with "Just The Kind of
Guy" from Kim Weston and a northern classic
"Get Out And Let Me Cry" from Harold Melvin.
Charlie
Dixon and Sean Tracey then took the decks around 10.30pm and kept
the dancefloor busy with an eclectic mix.
With the funk of Galaxy to the Chicago 60ss of Fred Hughes
"Baby Boy" and the very popular philly groover
"Backstabbers".
Duffs finished the night off in big style not content with airing
"Lovely Ladies" by the Allnight Band
at the Bay Radio Tsunami Charity Function, he had to give it another
airing on this occasion and a real old Pier Favourite from 1979.
He then went for Lenny Welch "You Picked AFine
Time" to accompany some RnB and classic Casino tunes
to keep our northern crew more than happy.
So
there you go Soul Heaven at the top of the stairs and you can catch
it all again on Saturday 21st May 2005 starting at 8.00pm till 1.00am.
Record dealers are always welcome, but please get in
touch to arrange prior to the Club Night. Come and join in the
party.
