Seaside Soul Club History

Well who are we?
We're a bunch of like minded geezers who want to bring quality soul music to the soul fans of Lancashire.

The concept
To play across the board soul music from the 60's to the present, in a happy friendly trouble free environment.

How we do it
Entrance to the soul nights cost just £2. This money goes into a kitty which funds certain consumables & supplements travel costs for members to visit concerts and soul nights at other venues. All our Crew members simply do it for the love of soul music.

The Club

The MHP (Morecambe Hat Posse) was formed at Caister weekender 1994, which forms a number of the Clubs Committee MembersSome of the Crew on our first Anniversay (or Crew). Other Crew members, many of them like minded soul fans who have toured the length and breadth of the UK in search of soul music, were drawn together at a meeting in June 2003.

The primary aim of those who attended was simply to get some soul music played. To do this the idea was to create monthly soul nights where the Crew, many of them avid record collectors and DJ's, could play their sounds. If any one came to listen, hey that'll be a bonus.

Over the previous years Morecambe and the surrounding area had seen many organised soul nights come and go. For those who may remember there were some classic all-nighters and concerts at the Central Pier (now part of the seabed!) through the 70's and 80's until the Pier's structural demise in the late 80's. The Carleton Inn, which still operates today, took over the soul mantle and ran many all-nighters during the late 80's. There's also been a host of Northern Soul nights dotted around the district through the 90's till the present day.

From the meeting the idea was born to form a local soul club playing soul music to whoever wanted to listen, and dance of course. Due to the make up of the Crew, and their differing soul tastes, it was pretty obvious we couldn't play just Northern, or just Modern Soul. With no venue in the area with two dance floors, The Seaside Soul Club would therefore simply play, and continue to play "The Full Scope of Soul Music" at all its Club nights.

The clubs first Soul night was in August 2003, since we've been working hard to promote the club in and around the local area and across the country. We've run many irregular subsidised coach trips to various soul nights in Fleetwood and Blackburn, and we've had some great nights at the Uppy.

We just look forward to more!
