"Keep On Keeping On"

You know it's a great feeling building up to another gig at The Seaside Soul Club, thinking about all the tunes you've ever heard and which ones to play. What makes people move and groove can be something of a lottery to mere mortals like myself.

Some DJ's simply turn up switch on a microphone and the crowd just respond. That's usually Duffs on the mike around 12.30am beered up and ready for the allniter that's cut short in its prime!!!

For others its a question of hit and miss, but generally a hit. Tried and tested oldies, some thumping newies and there were a few played last time out particularly from Sean T, with some semi known gems just to keep people guessing and keeping the night fresh.

It was great yet again to see the Kendal crew having a great time, well done lads to you for the support and to everyone who turned up for another successful night.

Good to see Diane and Pete Haigh up here again following the success of the Soul By The Sea gig, and of course Pete will be DJ'in at the popular Family Soulful Dance Night on Saturday April 1st at Lytham Academy alongside Kevin Priest Andy Lett and Steve Naylor. I hope the punter who asked Pete to write down the directions was able to find his way there. I could only direct him to the huge TESCO'S over the other side of the M55 for essential supplies!!

Many thanks to Roman and the missus for their kind words on the set and in particular the Major Lance "Don't You Know That I love you" (getting big plays in the north west) and Oscar Perry tracks. Glad they made it and hopefully we will be making the trip into East Lancashire for a great night of soul in Barnoldswick See the NW Events page for all the essential soulful nights in the area.

Over 100 punters came through the door with the first 25 enjoying their free CD which you can view on the site and listen to some of the sound bites too.

Anyway I digress, the point is you're all ready to go, putting a couple of what you think are great tunes on the decks and then it starts….
"Have you got Nolan Porter?"

"No I Haven't, I love the track but no sorry, I'll ask Duffs he's on next I'm sure he will have it and play it"
The look of absolute despair and the lady quietly turns away and moves back onto the dance floor.
Ten minutes later….

"Have you managed to find Nolan Porter "Keep on Keeping On"
"No love I'll ask Duffs to play it for you it's a great record but haven't got it myself"

Again a pause, and then a stare of disbelief, maybe too much lager maybe not enough, Nolan Porter, the girl's definitely not going to be happy until the opening shuffling staccato chords of this sixties Mecca classic is resounding around the room.

The DJ now in a spin, how can I possibly cope without Nolan Porter, I know I'll put on a stonewall classic, The Carstairs a true soul gem, sure enough the floor fills and knowing nods all around, safe bet great tune everyone's happy.

Well not actually, a third time and the lady like the song just keeps on keeping on "Have you found Nolan Porter yet?"
No, Sorry love, I'm sure we can dig Nolan out for the finale" or words to that effect were my reply!!

We've all experienced this as DJ's for those that spin tunes from time to time and the lady in question was very sweet about it. And you can guess what's at the top of my play list the next time I'm asked to spin a few tunes!!!!

I think we may need to get the tune on the club's website too for posterity.

We do take requests at the Club but we simply can't fulfill everyone's requirements, but I know judging from the reaction on the dance floor on the night it was another happy experience for everyone, with something for everybody in just the one room.

The night started with a mixture of 80s sounds and a sprinkling of Northern from our newest resident DJ and part time Club techie Simon Attwood, and some plays these ears hadn't heard for along time particularly Durell Coleman "Do You Love Me" First Choice's philly gem "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" and Johnnie Hudson's independent outing "Better Love".

Even an old halfway house favourite former Invitation Lew Kirton's "Don't Wanna Wait" was thrown into the mix. But the big tune was the Caister anthem form Eve Gallagher the first of the night the subwoofer mix of "Love Come Down" from 1990 and some early soulful house……

Tim Curry then followed and gave us a flavour of the Morecambe Pier with impeccable style. A bit of Johnnie Taylor, Stax and a 60ss favourite of mine Jackie Lee "Oh My Darling" on Mirwood, always like to hear that one. A great eclectic mix of sounds including (Tim's Pal!) Kim Weston and Spencer Davis Group too caught the ear.

We then got a flavour of the Family Tree Seaside Soul Style with Sean Treacy playing some great soulful dance and got the dance floor moving with DJ Genesis, a blinder in Eve Gallagher "Change of Mind" that has been duly snapped up on Ebay, throw in Maysa Leak, Vince Montana and Joi Cardwell and the House was rocking. Some Northern classics blended with some 70ss modern soul and the Club was filling up and seemingly enjoying the tunes.

Sean O'Connor played the usual blend of 70ss soul kicking off with the Lou Rawls anthem especially for Mr Morecambe FC himself Mick Dennison and a couple of newish tunes from Sonya Greir and the soulful mix of Vince Montana and unleashed the Major Lance monster "Don't You Know That I Love You" which went down a treat with Roman.

A few spirit of the Mecca grooves, The Producers, Scientists of Soul, Johnnie Moore and The Spinners "It's a Shame" paved the way for the last hour Northern Wigan Casino memories slot for Duffs.

I take full credit for the boy being in top form having swapped a David Ruffin 7" demo of "Rode by the Place" for a track he's been after for years, Lillian Hale "The Signs Were Wrong", a lovely floating 70ss tune on Fretone from 1974.

Classic after classic followed with a talced up dance floor bringing back all the memories, finishing off with Martha Reeves dreamy stepper "No One There" and the oh so soulful Cory Glover "Little Girl".

It was another great night of Seaside Soul.
