Item: Seaside Soul Night Review 16th December 2006

The Seaside Soul Club celebrated Christmas in fine style playing music across the board to a packed room and it was great to see the return of some friendly familiar faces including Gina from Preston and some of the Old Bath Hotel crowd enjoying themselves in party mood.

The Seaside Soul Club has been going just over three years and it was fair to say that this was up their with the very best nights we’ve ever had with the bar shutting too early at 1.00am and the punters clamoring for more tunes at 1.30am.

Si Attwood & Larry Longton played some cracking funky tunes to get everyone in the mood, Rasmus Faber inspired by listening to the wonderful Sandra C on Solar Radio finished off a great set along with a special Salsoul 12” “Helplessly” from the Moment of Truth.

It was that good a night, my recall is sketchy with all the fine beer being quaffed, but the music was spot on.

Tim Curry followed playing Morecambe pier King Tutt “You got me hung up” and Curtis “How can I tell her” and some class Northern Soul as the room started to fill.
Sean Tracey ensured that there was a steady stream of talc for the dancefloor and the dancers were not disappointed.

Our special guest DJ was Andy Lett who along with Pete Haigh and Jim Hargreaves who have DJ’d here before and have supported the club so well over the last three years. The lure of Holiday on the Buses or Please Sir on UK Gold couldn’t keep him in and we were very pleased that Andy played a blinding spot of soulful dance with the Fylde disco dancing formation team (Carmel Coral and Julia) bossing the dance floor along with our friends from Kendal Rod the trusty chauffeur and Robbie Vincent connoisseur Baz, Dave and Steve!! I don’t often get myself on the dance floor but the music all night was so good I now have two very tired pins as I write this the following morning with the nurofen’s just starting to take effect.

To these ears The Brothers of Soul featuring Joi Cardwell “Let it go”, Was a Bee “This is what you are” and Panevino featuring Charles Dockins “Best of me“ hitting the spot, a cracking piece of soulful house and some Italian house adding some great funky dance beats.

We had some Blackpool Mecca memories from Oscar Perry and Stevens and Foster to cap a cracking hour of music and we hope it isn’t too long before we see Andy back on the decks here.

The newly renamed Soulful Dance nights at Lytham have been booked by the crew with the next one on Saturday 3rd February 2007 and The Seaside Soul Club will be booking travel to that event in the next few days with full details published on the website and in the media soon.

Dastardly and Muttley aka Charlie and Sean Tracey followed Andy playing classic Northern Soul sounds to keep the Casino crowd happy and they weren’t disappointed with again a busy dancefloor and a very appreciative crowd. They mixed this with the likes of Ron Hall “The Way I Love you” and some tasty seventies funk too from Charlie ”Dr Funkenstein” Dixon.

Steve Hargreaves from Kendal Town Football Club kindly donated a couple of bottles of spirits for the raffle with Si Attwood taking one of the prizes and approximately £110 was raised on the night for the local St. Johns Hospice and we would like thank Steve for coordinating that one.

Sean O’Connor finished off the night with a blend of modern soul beered up monsters and dancefloor favourites and some 70ss classics to cap off a great night and hopefully we will see more well attended nights in 2007.

Sean will be appearing with Shaun Robbins on the Sunday Soul Selection on Solar Radio on Sunday 7th January 2007 Sky Channel 0129 and www.solarradio.com
