As I write these notes on a overcast Sunday morning listening to Bob Smith’ Sunday soul selection it seems that spring is approaching. We’ve beaten off those winter blues and those dark nights are behind us and I suppose thoughts turn to festivals and weekenders and more of that later.
January and February are always months where we suffer the effects of a Christmas overspend don’t we? and that goes for events attendances and purchasing sounds too well they do in this household!!!
I’m still getting to grips with a USB turntable and having the time to convert those lovely pieces of plastic into mp3s for my other Christmas Present the mobile/walkman, and what a great little bit of kit that is.
You can get about a 1Gb of music on there and thanks to those techies out there who can download some of the great soul shows on the net, I have plenty to listen to.
Weird feeling driving along listening to Soul Discovery and Shaun Robbins..lol!!
We know about Shaun’s show but don’t forget Mick O’Donnell’s absolutely essential Soul Discovery show every Saturday on the community radio station in Cambridge.
www209radio.co.uk is the station which broadcasts over the internet.
A date for your diary is as follows:
10th March
Phill Perry Mikelyn Roderick Adriana Evans
you can listen back here 24th February… Marcell & the Truth

Even better news is that Starpoint Radio has returned to the sky airwaves with an abundance of good listening. Might I draw your attention to two particularly essential shows for this column.
Fellow columnist Mark Randle has a monthly Friday night modern soul session with all the latest soulful dance grooves too. On Tuesday nights Nelly and partner Niki Golding (who is due to give birth anytime!!!) present some classic 70ss modern soul between the hours of 9.00pm and 10.30pm on a weekly basis and playlists and downloads for all of these shows can be found at www.essentialmodernsoul.co.nr. You can join in on the Starpoint forum too with the presenters and request tracks and publicise your events.
Looking around the Modern Soul Scene there were two highly successful weekends at The Blackpool Hilton with Incognito headlining in January and Kenny Thomas performing for the lovers at The Valentines weekend too.
Why not read SSC Sean & Alison Treacy's Review of the Blackpool Weekender HERE.
Both were well attended and I’m sure many will be making their way to Birmingham in May for the appearance of Ashford and Simpson.
Whilst the weekends prove to be popular, and more on that later, locally the mainstay gigs continue to thrive.
Over in Barnoldswick Roman reports that they had another successful night with 170 in attendance at The Rolls Royce suite playing northern but a good measure of 70ss modern thrown in there too.
The next essential gig is Friday 27th April. The Orwell Crew will have celebrated their 7th Anniversary and all roads lead to Wigan for the first leg of the North Lancs Soul Festival in Morecambe on Friday 27th April and guests on that night will be myself and Solar Radio’s Shaun Robbins playing crossover and 70ss modern soul.
Soulful Dance at Lytham and Soul By The Sea had well attended events and are flying the flag for great soul music on the Fylde.
The Soulful Dance Crew are back in action on Saturday 7th April for another great session of soulful Dance, the boys will also be djing at the North Lancs Soul Weekender in Morecambe too.
Jim Hargreaves runs and excellent night in Fleetwood and you can contact him and read reviews of those gigs at www.soulbythesea.co.uk. Jim is also involved in the Seductive soul sessions alongside lensman and disc spinner Chris Priestley and they have another popular modern soul event at the Nags Head in Lymm and for more details please click on www.seductivesoul.com
Over in the Manchester area Bury Town Hall run by Neil Jones goes from strength to strength celebrating its 8th anniversary in February and now starting to put on a modern room with a line up of top DJ’s th second Friday of each month and worth of your attention.
TSOP at Prestwich is still packing them in the first Friday of each month with always a great line up of DJ’s including Barry Maleady and Richard Searling. Richard of course presents a weekly radio show on Smooth Fm each Saturday between 6.00pm and 9.00pm presenting the cream of Modern soul from the 70ss right through to 2007 and you an tune in on SKY channel 0128.
Fellow soul Togetherness DJ Roger Williams is still at the forefront of Today’s Modern Soul and his Soulsorts show each Friday night on Solar Radio 1.00pm till midnight is unmissable with some great soul and gospel for 2007. You can download Roger’s shows and obtain playlists by clicking on www.soulsorts.co.uk or join in the discussion forum at www.essentialmodernsoul.co.nr.
April 8th sees a return to the Carleton Inn of the Soul Togetherness all niters and I will be helping to run the modern room playing 70ss right through to the latest soulful dance sounds. We had two excellent niters there with a packed modern room the last time out and look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. More details can be found on Kev Roberts’ goldsoul website www.goldsoul.co.uk and I’m sure many of you wish Kev a speedy recovery from his recent heart attack. There will be further sunday niters on May 27th and August 26th at the same venue.
Seaside Soul continue to put on regular monthly nights with a festive cracker in December with special guest DJ Andy Lett
At the end of April its The North Lancs Soul Festival, three days of soulful enjoyment to be had starting with a coach trip to the Orwell in Wigan and all the details can be found on the Festival Website.

This is a free weekend aside from the coach trip and hope that many of you can join in the fun. All you need is your beer money and if you want to stay over you accommodation money which is cheap in Morecambe.
We have a great line up of DJ’s, record bars seven venues and hopefully all the right tunes for you to hear so get yourselves over to Morecambe it should be a cracking weekend.
