Sunday
29th January saw the chance for me to join Shaun Robbins and Bob
Smith in the Solar Lounge. It was great to get the opportunity to
drop some Seaside Soul tunes and catch up with all the latest soul
news and swap sides and talk soul.
It
was also a great opportunity to talk more about our Soul Club and
to promote the Newsletter,
which is trying to help promote what's going on in the North West
of England Soul world.
I
opened the show with a Seaside Soul Club anthem in Lou Rawls' philly
anthem,"See you when I git there" which is enjoying a
revival, and played as a dedication to Lou who died in January this
year.
I
played a cross section of tunes (you can see the list below), dropped
the Ben Moore "I got a winner in you" which was well received
and of course The Drifters "Pour your little heart out"
which has now gone for £127 on Ebay last month.
Maxine
Weldon was dropped and a few phone calls ensued. Thanks to Andy
Lett from the Family Tree for putting me on that track and many
more on the show.
A
blend of 70ss and crossover followed and plenty of chat about the
scene. Bob Smith joined us on the show and was chastised for dealing
records on the show!!!! I managed to get some great trades from
Bob after the show including Brief Encounter, Jesus Alvarez and
Mildred Clarke!!!
I
was also pleased we could take in the excellent Daisys Diner in
Croydon for a great greasy spoon dinner!!!
The
show is going from strength to strength and now is sponsored by
the excellent Soul Brother Records who incidentally have a brilliant
sales list out right now.
We
received plenty of calls during the show and it was nice to talk
with Kevin, Dave, Ray Santos from Cardiff and I've been getting
regular email form Olindo in Italy too!!! Cant wait for the gig
in Milan Olindo!!!
Shaun
is dropping some great tunes including Major Lance's "Don't
know why I love you" on UK Contempo which set John Manship's
phone line buzzing last Monday and 9 callers desperately seeking
a copy.
You
don't want to miss the weekly show if you are a lover of 70ss and
crossover soul, with many collectors now buying these £15/£20
records and more venues opening rooms to cater for this kind of
music.
You
can check the website www.solarradio.com for the Sunday Soul Selection
from 10am on Sundays.
Shaun
has kindly invited me back on Sunday 30th April to celebrate my
birthday and I'm lining up tunes as we speak!!!!
Heres
the playlist from Shaun Robbins on Solar
Radio Jan 29th from yours truly, thoroughly enjoyed it.
